Editing or proofreading: Which one is essential if you can’t afford both?

As an editor and proofreader, I’d say both editing and proofreading are essential. But I know sometimes authors need to choose between paying for editing and paying for proofreading, to keep costs low. So, which one should you invest in: editing or proofreading?

When is editing more important than proofreading?

For most types of nonfiction writing, professional editing is essential, and self- or peer-proofreading can be a good substitute for professional proofreading. I think this is true for two reasons:

First, it’s much easier to self-proofread than to self-edit. Also, you can have your work proofread for free by your co-workers, friends, or family. But you shouldn’t be the only person to edit your own work. I explained why here.

Second, the risk of not having your work professionally edited is greater than that of not having it professionally proofread. If your DIY proofreading isn’t perfect, most of your readers will forgive you. In general, a few typos or the occasional verb tense inconsistency won’t alter your message.

But if you skimp on professional editing, will your readers forgive you if your writing is repetitive, confusing, illogical, poorly organized, dull, or hard to read? Judging by the criticism that poorly edited books receive, the readers will feel that the author has wasted their time.

When is proofreading more important than editing?

If you write a technical, scientific, or business document, not having it proofread can spell disaster. When the accuracy of figures, stats, and facts is critical, DIY proofreading won’t do. An amateur proofreader may not notice inconspicuous errors, such as a decimal comma instead of a decimal point. And not even the most advanced spell-checker can detect all errors in a document. So, when accuracy is essential but you have a limited budget, self-edit your work but then enlist the help of a professional proofreader.
